THE NEW GLOBAL ORDER -- CHINA’S WAY TO GLOBAL POWER AND HOW TRUMP HAS REDRAWN THE TRANSATLANTIC RELATIONSHIP -- 2018 experienced many unexpected developments internationally. Old established alliances threatened to fall apart, while others formed. The transatlantic relationship took a bit of a beating. The unpredictable American president, Donald Trump, has never sought to hide his aversion to the European Union, seeing it as the commercial “enemy” of his country. Since his election, these feelings have been expressed in a series of strong measures, such as removing the U.S. from the Paris Climate Accord, and the establishment of steep tariffs on European aluminium and steel. When Washington withdrew from the Iranian Nuclear Deal, it was the last straw, ending the historically friendly alliance – and the very high profiled “bromance” between Macon and Trump in the media. The most recent upset in this turmoil is the downgrading, by the Trump administration, of the diplomatic status of the European Union to a mere international organisation.
